Fabric Calculator
Estimate how much fabric you need for curtains, clothing, upholstery, quilts, and other projects using dimensions, quantity, fabric width, pattern repeat, and waste allowance.
Enter fabric details
Result
Enter your project measurements to estimate the fabric required.
Check the fabric direction
One-way prints, velvet nap, and directional designs may prevent rotating pattern pieces to save fabric.
Include seams and hems
Add allowances before calculating so every cut piece is large enough for stitching, finishing, and fitting.
Allow for shrinkage
Natural fabrics can shrink after washing. Pre-wash when appropriate or increase the waste allowance.
Frequently asked questions
How does this fabric calculator work?
It adds seam allowance to each piece, calculates how many pieces fit across the fabric width, determines the required rows, applies pattern-repeat rounding, and then adds your waste allowance.
What should I enter for pattern repeat?
Enter the distance before the fabric motif repeats along the roll. Use zero when the fabric has no repeat or matching is not required.
Does it work for curtains and upholstery?
Yes, for simple rectangular panels and pieces. Complex shapes, cushions, pleats, railroaded fabric, or professional upholstery layouts may require a custom estimate.
Should I round up when buying fabric?
Yes. Fabric is usually sold in fixed increments, and extra material helps cover cutting mistakes, shrinkage, print matching, and future repairs.
