Material Calculator
Estimate how much material you need for a rectangular project area. Calculate volume, weight, bags, waste allowance, and estimated total cost for soil, sand, gravel, mulch, or concrete.
Enter project details
Result
Enter the project dimensions to estimate the material required.
Measure the area
Enter the full length and width of the space. Use one consistent unit for both measurements.
Set the correct depth
Depth has a large effect on material quantity. Measure the finished compacted depth your project requires.
Add a practical allowance
Extra material covers settlement, spillage, uneven ground, compaction, and measurement differences.
Frequently asked questions
How does the material calculator work?
It multiplies length, width, and depth to find volume, then uses density to estimate weight and bag size to estimate the number of bags.
Why does density matter?
Two materials can fill the same volume but have very different weights. Density converts project volume into an approximate material weight.
Should I round the bag count up?
Yes. You cannot normally buy part of a bag, so the calculator always rounds the required number of bags up to the next whole bag.
Can I use this for bulk deliveries?
Yes. Use the volume result when ordering loose material by cubic metre or cubic yard, and confirm supplier density and delivery units.
