How much extra backing should I add around a quilt?
Many longarm quilters request about 4 inches of extra backing on every side. Always confirm the preferred allowance with your quilter before cutting.
What does usable fabric width mean?
Usable width is the fabric width after removing selvages. Standard quilting cotton often provides about 40–42 usable inches, while wide-back fabric may provide roughly 106–108 inches.
Should backing seams run horizontally or vertically?
Either can work. Choose the orientation that uses less fabric and suits the quilt design. Some longarm quilters prefer seams parallel to the loading direction.
Does this calculator include pattern matching?
No. Directional prints, large repeats, centered motifs, and pattern matching can require extra fabric beyond this estimate.
