It uses density = mass ÷ volume. To solve for a missing value, the same relationship is rearranged to mass = density × volume or volume = mass ÷ density.
g/cm³ is convenient for comparing materials and water. Water is close to 1 g/cm³, so values below 1 usually float and values above 1 usually sink, ignoring shape, trapped air and solubility.
Density can narrow the possibilities, but it is not a unique fingerprint. Temperature, purity, porosity and measurement error can change the result, so use additional tests for reliable identification.
