PPM formulas
PPM = (solute mass ÷ solution mass) × 1,000,000
1% = 10,000 ppm
1 ppm = 1,000 ppb
How the calculation works

250 mg equals 0.00025 kg. Dividing by 1 kg of total solution and multiplying by 1,000,000 gives 250 ppm. This is equal to 0.025% or 250,000 ppb.

Frequently asked questions
What does ppm mean?

PPM means parts per million. It describes one part of a substance for every one million parts of the total mixture.

Is 1 ppm equal to 1 mg/L?

For dilute water-based solutions with density close to 1 kg/L, 1 ppm is approximately equal to 1 mg/L. For other liquids, density must be considered.

How do I convert ppm to percent?

Divide ppm by 10,000. For example, 500 ppm equals 0.05%.

How do I calculate how much solute to add?

Multiply the target ppm by the total solution mass, then divide by 1,000,000. This calculator also handles volume by using the entered density.
