Measure standing reach
Stand flat-footed beside a wall and extend one arm straight upward. Measure from the floor to your highest fingertip.
Use an approach jump
A running approach often produces a higher jump than a standing jump, so test the same jump style you use for dunking.
Train safely
Build jump volume gradually, strengthen your legs and ankles, and allow recovery time between intense jumping sessions.
Frequently asked questions
How high do I need to reach to dunk?
For a basic dunk, many players need their hand roughly 6 inches or 15 centimetres above the rim. More clearance improves ball control.
Is touching the rim enough to dunk?
No. Touching the rim shows that you can reach basket height, but a controlled dunk usually requires additional hand clearance above it.
What if I do not know my standing reach?
Measure it against a wall for the most accurate result. Height alone cannot reliably predict standing reach because arm length varies.
Why can I reach high enough but still not dunk?
Ball size, hand grip, approach timing, takeoff technique, and the ability to control the ball in the air all matter.
