Pipe Calculator

Calculate a pipe's inside diameter, internal capacity, material volume, surface area, and estimated weight from its dimensions.

Enter pipe details

Default density is 7,850 kg/m³ for carbon steel. Change it for PVC, copper, aluminium, or another material.
⚠ Results are mathematical estimates. Always confirm nominal pipe size, schedule, tolerances, pressure rating, and manufacturer specifications before construction or engineering use.

Enter the pipe dimensions to calculate capacity and material quantities.

Internal pipe capacity
Inside diameter
Estimated pipe weight
Pipe material volume
Outside surface area

Outside vs inside diameter

Inside diameter equals outside diameter minus twice the wall thickness. It controls the pipe's internal capacity.

Weight depends on density

The same dimensions can produce very different weights when the pipe is made from steel, copper, aluminium, or plastic.

Nominal size can differ

Nominal pipe size is a trade label and may not equal the measured outside or inside diameter, especially for scheduled pipe.

Frequently asked questions

How is inside diameter calculated?

Inside diameter is calculated as outside diameter minus two times the wall thickness.

How is pipe capacity calculated?

The calculator treats the hollow inside as a cylinder. Internal volume equals π times the inside radius squared times the pipe length.

How is pipe weight estimated?

Material volume is the volume of the outer cylinder minus the inner hollow volume. That result is multiplied by the selected material density.

Can I use this for nominal pipe sizes?

Yes, but first enter the actual outside diameter and wall thickness from the relevant pipe schedule or manufacturer data.
