Extension controls red vs black
A foal with ee is chestnut-based. At least one dominant E allows black pigment to appear.

What do EE, Ee, and ee mean?
They are possible Extension genotypes. EE and Ee can produce black pigment, while ee produces a chestnut-based coat.
Why can two similarly colored horses produce a different-colored foal?
Parents may carry recessive alleles that are not visible in their own coat color. Genetic testing gives a more reliable input than appearance alone.
How is cream dilution handled?
One cream allele creates single-dilute colors such as palomino, buckskin, and smoky black. Two cream alleles create double-dilute colors such as cremello, perlino, and smoky cream.
Does gray count as the horse’s base color?
No. Gray progressively masks an underlying base color. The calculator labels gray outcomes while also showing the hidden base color in parentheses.
